Do you suffer from poor gut health?

  • Bloating?

  • Diarrhea?

  • Constipation?

  • Stomach Pain?

  • Skin issues - rashes, eczema, psoriasis, acne?

  • Joint pain?

  • Depression?

  • Anxiety?

  • Nausea?

  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is the presence of excess bacteria in the small intestine. SIBO can cause bloating, nausea, diarrhea or constipation.

  • A group of symptoms including bloating, a change in bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea or both) and abdominal discomfort.

  • An imbalance in gut bacteria in the large intestine resulting in symptoms such as bloating, constipation or diarrhea.

How can I help?

There are so many causes of poor gut health and the first step is to work out what is causing your symptoms. Some common causes are:

  • Conditions such as IBS, SIBO, dysbiosis

  • Fibre - Too much, too little, carbohydrate malabsorption (FODMAP foods)

  • Lifestyle - Not enough exercise, stress, alcohol, diet high in processed food

  • Gluten - celiac disease, gluten sensitivity

  • Lactose intolerance

  • Allergies and intolerances/sensitivities

  • Infections - parasites

  • Candida/Yeast overgrowth

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) - Chrohns or Ulcerative colitis

An initial 1 hour consultation will explore dietary and lifestyle factors that may be affecting your gut health. I may recommended that you follow a certain way of eating for a trial period to help determine the cause of symptoms. This could include an elimination diet, low FODMAP diet, low histamine diet or other short term variations. Herbal and nutritional supplements as well as lifestyle modifications may also be prescribed.

If necessary, functional and pathology testing may be organised. Tests include celiac testing, SIBO breathtests, FODMAP breathtests, allergy testing, stool testing, gluten sensitivity, DNA testing, organic acids testing (OAT), intestinal permeability.

I often use the G.E.M.M. (Gut ecology and Metabolic Modulation) protocol to address not only gut issues but also chronic health and immune conditions (see below).

G.E.M.M - Gut Ecology and Metabolic Modulation

The G.E.M.M. protocol is a way to improve your gut and overall health by utilising your body's own defence mechanisms and healing abilities. It utilises an inclusive diet together with effective natural therapeutics to encourage your body to heal itself. G.E.M.M. is designed to incorporate a balanced lifestyle approach.
G.E.M.M.’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it is a lifestyle approach that utilises the principles of a branch of Nutrition Science called Nutrigenomics. This is the study of how foods and specific food molecules influence the expression of our genes. Such food molecules activate 'switches' within our cells; if the source of these molecules is health-promoting, our protective genes are 'turned up' - but if the molecules are from 'junk' food, these health-promoting genes are 'turned down' and the disease-promoting genes are 'turned-up'.

While targeting digestive health is the first step of the G.E.M.M. Protocol, the second step focuses on restoring the communication between the gut and its underlying immune network. In doing so G.E.M.M. balances the complex immune system, thereby enhancing the response to infection while reducing allergy and autoimmune reactions.

All aspects of the G.E.M.M. Protocol have their foundation in peer-reviewed scientific evidence, with the accompanying nutrigenomically-active G.E.M.M. formulations based on food derived ingredients for which clinical trials demonstrate efficacy.
